Why Is My Excel File Read-Only? How to Fix It
Updated March 2026 · 4 min read
Opening an Excel file only to see "Read-Only" in the title bar is frustrating. There are several reasons this happens — and most of them have straightforward fixes. This guide covers every common cause and how to resolve each one.
Cause 1: "Read-Only Recommended" Flag
When saving a file, Excel lets you check "Read-Only Recommended" in the Save As dialog (under Tools → General Options). This adds a<fileSharing> tag inside the .xlsx file that prompts users to open in read-only mode.
Fix:
- Click "No" when prompted to open as read-only
- Or use XL Unlocker to permanently remove the flag
Cause 2: Sheet-Level Protection
The worksheet may be protected via Review → Protect Sheet. This prevents editing cells but doesn't make the file truly read-only — you can still open it.
Fix:
- If you know the password: Review → Unprotect Sheet
- If you don't: remove sheet protection with our free tool
Cause 3: Write Protection Password
A write protection password was set when saving the file. Excel asks for this password when you try to edit. The <writeProtection> tag in the XML stores a hash of the password.
Fix: Use XL Unlocker to strip the write protection tag instantly.
Remove all read-only restrictions instantly
Our free tool removes read-only recommendations, write protection, and sheet protection in one click.
Fix Your Read-Only FileCause 4: File Is Open by Another User
On shared drives, Excel locks files while they're open. You'll see a notification like "This file is locked for editing by [user]."
Fix: Ask the other user to close the file, or check for a lock file (~$filename.xlsx) and delete it if the user has already closed Excel.
Cause 5: File Properties Set to Read-Only
The file itself may have the read-only attribute set at the operating system level.
Fix: Right-click the file → Properties → uncheck "Read-only" → Apply.
Cause 6: Downloaded from the Internet (Protected View)
Files downloaded from email or the web open in Protected View, a sandboxed read-only mode for safety.
Fix: Click "Enable Editing" in the yellow bar at the top of the Excel window.
